Join us for a viewing party of the fireworks from our front windows, in the comfort of the museum’s Bil Keane Family Lobby and the Drawing Room (our educational and program space). The event kicks off at 7:00 pm with a picnic-style spread including sandwich fixings, potato salad, fruit, chips and beverages.

Closing Reception and Trans March Pre-Party

Get ready for Trans March 2019 with cartoonist Maia Kobabe and eir debut solo graphic novel Gender Queer: A Memoir on exhibit at the Cartoon Art Museum. Maia will be on hand to sign copies and socialize with attendees. Poster board and markers to make signs for the march will also be provided. Suggested Donation at the door, $5. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. This will be a sober safe space.

Cooke in conversation with Last Gasp founder Ron Turner and Cartoon Art Museum founder Malcolm Whyte for an evening discussion of the new publication, The Book of Weirdo, a retrospective of R. Crumb's legendary publication, and Art Out of Chaos: The Illustrated Biography of Maxon Crumb, published by F.U. Press, an imprint of Fantagraphics Books.

Toon Talk: Steve Greenberg

The Cartoon Art Museum welcomes Steve Greenberg, editorial cartoonist for publications including Ventura County Reporter and the Jewish Journal of Los Angeles, on Sunday, June 2, 2019, from 2pm to 4pm. Greenberg will be doing a presentation about his work starting at 2pm in the Museum’s Drawing Room. At 3pm he will sign books and be available for questions and conversation. He will also have some of his own books available for purchase.

MAY CARTOONIST IRL (IN REAL LIFE): STEPHEN CONN (WRITER FIGHTERS)

The Cartoon Art Museum welcomes Stephen Conn, creator of Writer Fighters, on Saturday, May 25, 2019, from 1pm to 4pm as part of its visiting artist program Cartoonist IRL (In Real Life). This event is free and open to the public in the Bil Keane Family Lobby. Conn will be set up in the front lobby area of the museum signing books, drawing, answering questions, and hanging out. He will also have copies of Writer Fighters available for purchase.

COMIC SHOP HOP

Come out and support your local comic shop and other shops around the Bay Area this Free Comic Book Day by participating in the Comic Shop Hop! What is the Comic Shop Hop? The Comic Shop Hop is a comic book store scavenger hunt throughout the entire Bay Area. Participants will go from store to store filling up their passport as they go along, tracking their progress from store to store. Like any good scavenger hunt, participating in the Comic Shop Hop will result in a chance to win prizes! All participants who visit two or more comic shops, get the shop marked off on their passport, and submit their passport to a Google Form (link to the form is found on the passport) will be entered into a raffle.

2019 QUEER COMICS EXPO (QCE)

Rainbows will follow rainstorms at the Queer Comics Expo on April 27-28 from 11am to 5pm each day at the Cartoon Art Museum’s new home in Fisherman’s Wharf at 781 Beach Street. The expo encourages attendees to dress up, draw, meet artists, mingle, watch demonstrations, join conversations, and learn about the fierce LGBTQAI+ world of comics and cartoons. This year the Queer Comics Expo is proud to feature the Bay Area’s emerging cartoonist, Maia Kobabe as the special guest.

The Spirit of Mini-Comics Challenge

The Cartoon Art Museum invites comic-makers of all levels to come join in a mini-comics challenge. Come celebrate Will Eisner Week by helping make 30 or more comics in one day! Organizer Brian Kolm and other cartoonists will be on hand to help you complete your very own mini-comic to take home. Present your completed mini-comic to be photographed and get a reward from the Cartoon Art Museum. Demonstrations, creative coaching and materials provided. This event is free and open to the public.
